Beginner Modern with Kayla
tuesdays from 7:30-9:00pm
Beginner Modern features professional dancer and instructor Kayla Brazelton. This class is perfect for dancers with some prior dance knowledge/experience and is beginner-friendly. Drawing from Horton and Graham techniques, this class will provide a strong technical foundation in a supportive, welcoming environment where dancers can grow and thrive.
This class is designed for novice dancers or students who have not danced for many years. We will continue to emphasize proper posture, muscle development, flexibility, musicality, and grace of movement through beginner-level combinations. Students will learn basic dance vocabulary and foundational elements of modern dance in addition to the overall growth of skills.
Kayla Brazelton was born and raised in Chicago. She began her dance training at The Chicago High School for the Arts. She went on to earn her BFA in Dance and Choreography with a Minor in Exercise Science from the University of Missouri- Kansas City, building a strong foundation in contemporary and classical movement. Kayla continued her training at The Ailey School in New York City, where she was honored to receive a scholarship. Throughout her development, she has deepened her artistry through rigorous training with San Francisco Ballet, Complexions Contemporary Ballet Academy, Kansas City Ballet, and Dance Theatre of Harlem. She has performed works by renowned choreographers, including Jae Man Joo, Rena Butler, Ray Mercer, Nicole Clarke-Springer, Dan Karasik, Gary Abbott, Christian Denice, and Kevin Iega Jeff.
Kayla has performed contract work with Norwegian Cruise Line and continues to pursue freelance performance opportunities. She is currently a company member with Contemporary West Dance Theatre, joining them for their 2025–2026 season, where she is excited to continue expanding her artistic voice and performance career.
